Therapy for
High-Functioning Anxiety
On the outside, everything looks fine. On the inside, your mind hasn’t stopped in years.
High-functioning anxiety often doesn’t look like anxiety at all. You show up, you perform, you hold it all together, and yet underneath, your mind won’t slow down. If you live with a persistent sense of unease, self-doubt, or internal pressure that seems disconnected from your outward success, you’re not alone.
I offer online therapy for adults across Illinois with a therapist who specializes in high-functioning anxiety.
Do you feel anxious even when nothing seems “wrong”?
Maybe you can’t turn off your mind, no matter how hard you try. You may feel tense, restless, or on edge, always bracing for the next thing. Perhaps you replay conversations, imagine worst-case scenarios, or carry a quiet undercurrent of inner judgment.
High-functioning anxiety doesn’t always look like panic attacks. For many capable, driven adults, it’s the pressure to maintain a high level of output, the relentless comparison to others, and the inability to truly rest that makes it hard to feel calm, present, and at ease.
Why high-functioning anxiety feels so overwhelming
High-functioning anxiety narrows your focus. It pulls your attention toward potential threats, past mistakes, or imagined outcomes. Over time, this ongoing vigilance can leave you mentally fatigued and physically tense.
When your nervous system remains activated for long periods of time, even small stressors can feel amplified. What begins as an attempt to stay prepared or responsible can gradually become a cycle of over-functioning, second-guessing, and internal pressure. Many high-functioning adults become so skilled at appearing capable that they stop recognizing how much effort it takes just to get through the day.
For some women, anxiety intensifies or appears for the first time during perimenopause, when hormonal shifts can significantly affect the nervous system and emotional regulation.
At the same time, anxiety often carries information. It can signal unmet needs, accumulated stress, or ways we’ve learned to cope by pushing ourselves too hard.
How therapy can help
In our work together, we’ll slow things down and create space to understand what’s driving your anxiety. We’ll notice the patterns and triggers that fuel worry and overfunctioning, and explore the deeper roots of self-doubt and internal pressure. We’ll also work on developing your capacity to welcome your emotions rather than fight them, explore what your anxiety may be signaling, and to respond thoughtfully rather than react automatically.
My approach draws from Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness, and attachment-focused perspectives. We’ll go beyond temporary coping skills to work toward deeper understanding and a genuine shift in how you relate to yourself.
Over time, many clients find that the internal noise quiets, their nervous system settles, and their choices feel more deliberate and aligned with who they actually want to be.
I offer virtual therapy for adults throughout the Chicago western suburbs and across Illinois, including Naperville, Hinsdale, Oak Brook, Glen Ellyn, and Clarendon Hills. You can begin this work from the comfort of your own space.
